American Alligator, Alligator mississippiensis
These massive reptiles can grow to be 11 feet long and weigh almost half a ton! The American Alligator inhabits marshlands all along the southern coast of the states, from Texas to North Carolina. Alligators are considered a keystone species by providing small ponds where aquatic organisms can reside during the dry season. They are also an important biological indicator of the health of the Everglades and Wetland habitats.
